Slight Improvement in Building Conditions, but Civil Lags
The quarterly cidb SME Business Conditions Survey shows that the decline in the growth in General Building activity appears to have stabilised in Quarter 1 of 2012, and the overall business confidence of building contractors rose marginally in Quarter 1. The tempo of labour shedding slowed during the survey quarter. Business conditions for Civil Engineering however underperformed expectations, and weakened considerably when compared to Quarter 4 of 2011. 80% of the Civil Engineering respondents reported insufficient demand as a serious constraint on their operations.
